[OOC] Application for Elegy City

[Player LJ]
[info]dementiamorphea
[Player name] Dem

[Series] D.Gray-Man
[Character] Yu Kanda

[Description]
Kanda looks Asian, and his birthplace is apparently documented as Japan, even though the truth about it all is a huge secret within the Black Order, as well as an "Om" symbol tattoo(?) on the left side of his chest.

He's 1,77 meters (5'9") tall and weights around 60 kg (130 lbs). His hair is black, eyes either very dark blue or brown, or black as well. He wears his hair long and tied into a high ponytail, often leaving long strands at the sides of his face, he also has a straight fringe reaching down almost to his eyes. He's well-built, has some muscle but it doesn't make his body look heavy. He is stated to be "very beautiful" by the author herself, and indeed his face can almost resemble a female's, especially when he was younger (another character, Lenalee, had mistaken him for a girl when they met at ages 10 and 8 respectively).

He usually wears simple, somewhat half-formal clothing, mostly including various types of black pants and shoes or boots, white button shirts, and sleeveless shirts, commonly black. He also seems to own some rather funny looking sweaters (rumors have it that actually his General made it for him). His uniform is a long mandress coat with a belt, and he always carries his Innocence sword Mugen with him (or a normal one if that one's in repairs). Examples: [uniform] [casual clothing] [casual clothing 2] [gay sweater] [typical clothing in battle].

[Personality]
Kanda is far from what you may call "pleasant". He's stubborn, closed-up, rude, cold and often violent - to those he doesn't care about, that is - and swears quite a lot (apparently he already knew the word @*&%$#*&$#%! when he was 9). In fact, the jerkiness seem to be a natural thing to him, as he was shown just as unfriendly and even more easily provoked into 'beating shit up' as a child. He's rather pessimistic and introverted, or so described by the very first friend he somehow managed to make, also ranked as the dumbest out of the main four by the author. At the same time, he does care for most of his comrades despite of saying otherwise and on certain occasions will risk his life to save them if necessary. He doesn't like people acting familiarly with him nor using his first name ("Yu"), but there are a few people that seem to get away with it; General Tiedoll, Lavi and Alma Karma always call him Yu but are threatened less than half of those times, Lenalee Lee can whack him in the head with no consequences and has even received a compliment from him at some point (they also sometimes meditate together, since they were children even). He also will only eat soba and nothing else, and seems to prefer routine to surprises. Despite of his pride and seemingly holding himself above everyone else, he can be a bit childish or even petty at times, like stealing a ribbon from a little girl to tie his hair since his own tie got damaged in a fight.

He takes his work and orders very seriously; mission is always the first priority to him, and as long as it's possible he carries out the orders given by his superiors "whatever happens". At the same time, he claims not to care what goes on with the Order itself and doesn't seem to even be Christian, also openly hating their 'bosses' from Vatican, therefore his loyalty seems to be directed at Komui and the Generals rather than those higher up.

[Personality, Expanded]

Kanda's personality is simple enough, but it actually makes him a rather complex character, possibly because the roots of his behavior differ from other series' characters that appear similar on the outside.

First of all, he is rude, stubborn, proud, rather cold and often arrogant. He doesn't open to people, nor talk to them unless he really wants to say something and even then his sentences are rather short and commonly include swearwords. His overused phrase that is his most common response to things he doesn't bother to answer to is simply "Che", or a similar monosyllabic sound. He looks down on a lot of people, often even ridiculing their feelings, though he also shows certain amount of respect to his superiors and Lenalee. Due to being able to use Innocence, he refers to all supporters as failures; he is powerful and doesn't see the need to be modest about it.

He's also quite violent and doesn't mind to resort to drastic means to prove his point or to get what he wants, including full-fledgedly attacking his comrades when they didn't want to leave him behind, or holding his blade at a child's throat to make him confess. It can also be pointed out that he shows less than zero remorse over either of these situations even after some time passing, and doesn't even seem to think he had done anything special or 'bad' at all.

In fact, he doesn't seem to get quite a lot of things, and not only because he's supposedly the dumbest out of the main four. Due to the wicked canon, instead of being normally born he had awakened from a pond at about 9 years old biologically. Even though it is unclear if he had any knowledge and motorics already, he's soon shown walking and talking according to how a 9 year old should; however now that he's around 19 he does at points act as if he was around 10 mentally as either way that is the period during which he had life experience. And that life experience mostly included the war, as well as being disciplined to act like a soldier and not show emotions right from his 'birth'.

What is even more intriguing, his rude and irritable jerk nature isn't the result of any of this. He had been swearing and telling people off more or less from the moment he started talking. He was also even quicker to resort to physical violence. Also one might say he was a bit whiny, close to the point of being a crybaby, what isn't the case now (although he was shown to become just as whiny when he gets drunk, and being actually rather nice though still an asshole to his theoretical new best friend Lavi, just like to Alma before that). Grown-up Kanda appears to be a little colder and more reserved, often calling out his threats in a calm tone rather than shouting, but generally he is the same as back then.

Kanda is very loyal and puts Black Order missions as his first priority, even though he hates its Central Agency. One might say that he is in fact loyal to Komui and the Generals rather than the Order itself, and that would seem rather true. He is very serious about orders and will lecture others if he thinks they're fooling around instead of what Exorcists should do.

Despite of all that, he still shows a certain amount of care to a few people, though that care still includes threats and sometimes smacking. He respects General Tiedoll and seemed secretly rather protective of him when the enemies, the Noah, started hunting down the Generals, even though he also admitted he 'hates the old geezer' for being odd, in other words, loving. He also gets along quite well with his teammates, Marie and the late Daisya, and these don't even seem to get threatened by him - nor does Lenalee, whom he presumably grew up with. Despite of witnessing her showing her weakness possibly more than anyone else in the Order other than her brother, he also respects her and considers her a 'strong woman' - he even tells her that, and that is the only compliment Kanda has given anyone this far. He also seems to somewhat get along with Lavi, especially when drunk, and often lets him get away with calling him by his first name. His mocking lectures to Allen might also be secretly well-intended, and he was shown saving a Finder from Akuma, even though he was also shown nearly strangling one to death due to being too loud when Kanda was eating. He was also considerably friendly, though still being his own rude pessimistic self, to Alma Karma; however despite of thinking of him as his best friend, when pitched with him in a deadly match he killed him rather than letting them both go down, and later in the series he implies he's ready to do it again if needed.

Kanda doesn't use a huge variety of facial expressions; most usually he has a small frown on his face. It can vary by becoming darker or going into a blank expression, there's also the truly murderous look that was shown only a couple of times this far which usually signifies blind rage that everyone sane should run away from. Even though he was shown rarely but smiling as he was a kid, he almost never does that anymore and will rather wear a smug contented expression or a slightly psychotic homicidal grin.

Finally, there have been several moments that might imply his mental stability being questionable. Not only him being angry beyond logic and any boundaries, smiling while being technically killed or using violent means on subordinates point that way; as a child he was seeing hallucinations related to his mysterious 'birth', and, when he was considered to be a failed experiment and decided to be cryogenically frozen, he is seen maniacally laughing like a true madman, moments before he finally manages to connect to the Innocence.

[Canon]
Kanda first appears in chapter 5, giving the main character a rough welcome of nearly having his head cut in two. He seems to be more or less taking up the role of the anti-protagonist as he doesn't get along with Allen Walker at all and they fight almost every time they meet. Their views on both people and the war differ quite rapidly, so that might also be part of the reason. On the first mission they get sent on, he lectures the brat about what does it mean to be an Exorcist and that there are always sacrifices in war (but said brat doesn't seem to have listened).

The secret behind Kanda's quick recovery and immunity to the Akuma blood virus among other things was kept from the readers for a long time and only recently some of it was finally uncovered.

Quite a few of his personality traits, such as both maturity and sometimes-childishness, seem to come due to how he was raised; he was a part of "Artificial Apostle Project", where supposedly his body was either created or strongly altered (due to that he recovers much faster than regular humans and apparently can't be killed) and, due to force-made relation to a dead Exorcist (what made him see hallucinations, revealed to be a ghost lady that his 'past life' was attached to, and, later on, multiplying lotuses), was forcibly attempted to synchronize with an Innocence (in what he succeeded, after many failed attempts). During this whole 'training', he was constantly under watch and taught not to act on his emotions and instead behave like a soldier should (he was around 9 at the time), not to mention that after another subject's - and, more or less, his friend's - failure, he had to kill him. Also, it was recently shown in the manga that he doesn't show remorse about it and seems to be ready to do something like that again if it was needed.

Kanda's Innocence is a sword named Mugen, however he has shown exceptional skill with a simple sword as well. Mugen has several techniques called 'Illusions'; this far Kanda was shown using up to 'Fourth Illusion' which's abilities weren't elaborated on much. Both second and third ones increase his speed drastically, making him no more than a blur in the fight; however, unlike injuries of no matter what caliber, using Innocence's 'Third Illusion' and up are draining from his life force. It wasn't completely answered why that is happening, but it's possible it has something to do with who and what he is.

Kanda's personality and motivation doesn't seem to have changed at all during the course of the series; surprisingly quite a few people care about him, including Tiedoll, Lenalee and apparently Bak, and he is also one of top-ranking Exorcists.

Some of the questions surrounding him haven't been answered yet.

[Timeline]
Kanda will arrive from the suitable moment of the between of right after the Istanbul mission and the fight with awakened Alma Karma.

[RP Sample]

Kanda hated idiots.

Idiots were always happy, hopeful and smiling stupidly, and bleeding and dying, and then there was unnecessary paperwork, damn them all to hell. And all idiots were the same. Even if it didn't seem like that at first.

Alma was an idiot because he was annoying, clingy and thought what the Order was doing was good. Tiedoll was an idiot because he was clingy, believed in God, and rejoiced in little useless temporary things such as the 'beauty of architecture'. Lavi was an idiot because he was persistent, annoying and, guess what, clingy. Beansprout was an idiot because he thought he was a messiah who could save the world without sacrificing a damn soul. Komui was an idiot because he had a stupid sister complex. And so on, so on, so on.

And he tried to tell himself that Lenalee was an idiot too, simply because she cared too much. All the idiots cared too much, and they apparently dared to care about him as well, because he himself sure as hell wouldn't remember his own birthday, but they did, and that was so annoying.

Mostly because he was made to promise he would come into the silly hall decorated like for all the birthdays happening here in the Order and be greeted by Lenalee and the idiots, and therefore he had to do it even if he hated it.

"Che," he grumbled silently as he finally headed for the door.
